Tamil Nadu to set up footwear park

Plans to establish a new footwear manufacturing park on a 250-acre site in Tamil Nadu have been announced by the Indian state government’s chief minister, Muthuvel Stalin. According to Mr Stalin, this project would create 20,000 new jobs in Ranipet district. The state government is said to have implemented several projects in the leather and footwear industries since 2022, following the publication of a footwear and leather products policy.

“By witnessing such growth, it gives me the confidence to say that the day is not far in achieving the USD 1 trillion economy by 2030,” stated the chief minister, adding: “the government is taking several initiatives in its push to garner investments in this sector.”

The Tamil Nadu government is also reportedly planning to establish industrial parks on a separate 50-acre site for the leather and footwear industries, which will be financed through public-private partnerships. Mr Stalin said that these ventures showcase the government’s efforts to attract investment which will benefit people in deprived districts.

Tamil Nadu is said to produce 38 per cent of India’s leather footwear, garments and components, as well as having 60 per cent of the country’s tanning capacity and making half of its leather exports.
