French sporting goods producer and retailer Decathlon has purchased Bergfreunde, a German online retailer offering products for mountain sports and climbing, in addition to other outdoor equipment. Bergfreunde was founded in 2006 on the site of a former textile factory near the southern German city of Tübingen, and currently employs more than 320 members of staff.

The Bergfreunde website indicates that the company stocks over 140,000 items from 500 big-name outdoor brands within a 10,000 square metre warehouse located in the town of Ergenzingen, approximately 18 km from Tübingen.

According to Decathlon, which currently has 2,080 stores located in 56 countries, this acquisition will bring it into contact with a new group of customers who are shopping in the premium-outdoor segment, and the venture will help it to expand within a number of key European markets.
