New laboratory management module for SAFT

Introducing an important revision to this footwear training course.

An eighth module in the SATRA Accredited Footwear Technologist (SAFT) course is being launched in 2024. Entitled ‘Laboratory Management’, it will focus on the critical aspects of quality system implementation in testing laboratories and how the control of these is crucial in order to produce accurate test results. Among the key topics to be covered are the purpose of quality systems, test method selection and control, equipment calibration, staff training and a range of areas critical in ensuring good practice.

The primary objective of a quality system in a testing laboratory is to guarantee the precision and traceability of test results. By ensuring that all parameters within the facility are controlled and documented procedures are consistently followed, tests can be carried out reliably regardless of staff changes or other significant events. Central to this is the existence of a laboratory manual detailing all policies and procedures.

Learning what to test

Selecting the appropriate test method is crucial for obtaining accurate and repeatable test results. Different methods – even those testing the same property – can yield different outcomes. Hence, it is vital to follow documented testing procedures, typically in the form of test methods issued by international technical bodies or brand owners. During this training session, participants will engage in exercises to understand the nuances between various test methods and how to select the most suitable procedures, taking into consideration customer requirements and internal policies.

Calibration ensures that testing equipment is suitable for the designated test methods. Rather than being merely about visual correctness, this action is key to adherence to the requirements stipulated in the test methods. SAFT-trained participants will learn the importance of calibration, how to interpret calibration certificates and conduct calibration exercises to reinforce their understanding of test methods.

All members of staff involved in testing procedures must undergo proper training, which should be recorded and periodically updated. Training ensures competency and adherence to established methods. Delegates to the new SAFT module 8 will examine training records and participate in scenarios to assess staff competency in correctly executing test procedures.

The importance of records

The module 8 sessions will also cover the significance of standard reference materials, maintaining appropriate laboratory conditions, work initiation and progress tracking, as well as the recording of testing data, reporting, storage of completed work and how to handle complaints.

In essence, SAFT module 8 aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish and maintain robust quality systems in testing laboratories. By emphasising consistency, accuracy and adherence to standardised procedures, laboratories can ensure reliability in their test results, thereby bolstering confidence among stakeholders and clients.

How can we help?

SAFT module 8 is scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on 10th June, Dongguan, China on 18th June, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on 17th July. Please email training@satra.com for full information.
